Angel's Dream Cover

the famous first words

Angel's Dream was record live direct to a two-track digital DAT recorder in the Aquilante Studio (Rio de Janeiro), my personal studio. Except for the two tracks where my brother Beto Frega plays piano & synth, I've played all the instruments by myself and recorded to a computer (PC 486 and Pentium) using the Cakewalk Pro Sequencer software.

After that, I added the guitars with no editions or overdubs while recording to the DAT recorder. The reason of all this was to bring you the actual live guitar sound with no tricks (what you heard is what was played). This kind of live recording is not commom, but I think that it is very boring to listen to an album recorded enterily with computers. In my CD you can listen to mistakes.

There is no problem with mistakes. People fail and the major problem is that many don't recognize that. I'm not a perfect man - I know that - and I love real humans who knows that nobody is perfect.

The songs in the album tells stories about people, love and life. The use of synthesizers make it possible to work like an orchestra - with violins, brass and percussion - or like a rock band - drums, bass and keyboards. You could listen to a minueto played by synthesized guitar or to an orchestral work for a children's ballet called "The Cicada and The Ant Suite"

MySelf in the good old says playing an Ovation 1621

All songs are originals (registered by BMG Arabella) except the first part of the minueto (writen by Roberto de Viseo) and a free arranger made for "Malagueña de Lecuona". I used many differents guitars but the main axe is one built specially for me and it is connected to a synthesizer. This kind of set up made it possible to play up to twelve synthesized sound plus the guitar sound at once. Of course it is a bit hard to discover wich synthesized sound was played live, but if you listen closer you can discover the true one. Regarding the guitar's sound you have no choice but to say: it's live.

I think Progressive Music is something different from the Progressive Rock of the 70's. For me (and some friends) it is not only mix classic music and rock. It is not only a mix. Progressive Music must came from the heart. Must go directly to the listener's heart. There's no other way. I did that and I am very pleased to bring to you the results of this work.It was made from my heart to your heart.
If you like Progressive Rock, World Music or Good Music you will enjoy this CD.

I had many problems before releasing this album and decided to share them with you.

The bureau (MCK) who did the master, fail to check one song, and "burn" its begining. There is also a problem with the covers' colors. The final result wasn't like mine. In the original cover, the colors are more darken and the cover's photo more like a painting.
All of that was lost in the process.

I wrote this diary to remember all dates for my attorney. After all I thought that if you read what happens, and if you are thinking about release your own CD, for shure will be something you might use. Send me a letter if you need any help.

June
02-05
1997

The MCK's director (Mr.Taciano) is doing everything to do a good job. We spoke by phone many times these days.

The proofs they send me, were poor because we use diferent monitors and printers. Seeing my own printing copys of the cover's art revealed that. They did a exactly copy of my work. The pictures (you can see here) not display in the same way in their monitors. They use "balanced" professional monitors (I don't know if this term are correct in English) and I use a commom one (Samsung SyncMaster 3Ne). So I am waiting for the new proofs based on my colors. (Next time I will send a print copy with the disks.)

He apologized for the mistakes and asked me to send the CDR (reference CD) and the disks with the art, they will redo all the work (good news) I told him that all material were with them, so he will search inside MCK for that. Early afternoom they send me a fax with the excuses. I need to phone to PROCON to thanks Mara, the woman from PROCON.

the songs

 the songs commented

My songs tell stories about people, life and feelings and I hope you enjoy this work, since this record is for you.

1. Overdose

is a song to a lovely friend who is a little "over" to my taste, but a great friend at all.

2. Dick Tracy

was played through modem with my brother Beto Frega on keyboards at Curitiba.

3. Amanhecer

Day after day, night after night, this is life... Is this "our" life? (I would like to thank Mr.Peter Gabriel for the idea of recording the first version of this song before dinner).

4. 702

This song was written to a little girl who lives in the house in front of mine and stays all day at the window, on the phone speaking with her boyfriend.

5. Vincent - O Abutre

was written for Mr.Vincent Price and the comedian Jerry Lewis. This was a first-and-only-one take.

6. Parkiño

a song to my little angel, the first idea was to make a happy song, but the boy went sick and my happiness went away. I played this song many times trying to understand why children get sick.

7. Harlekin (Malagueña de Lecuona)

is a fresh and free interpretation of Malagueña. I wrote this song as a tribute to some latin musicians and my own origins. You can hear a citation of Chick Corea's LaFiesta; "tango strings" in memorian to the great Astor Piazzola; the "Santana's percussion" during the the guitar solo. The Arabian organ (There is an Arabian Organ?...) solo is a recollection of my grandfather Darcy.

8. Estudo # 1

has a sort of a classical structure mixed with electric guitar that was fun to play.

9. Suite - The Cicada and the Ant

is a ballet based on the children´s story, but with a different and tragic end: the death of the Cicada and its funeral. Intense use of the synth guitar playing all melodies here.

10. Curitiba

is a beautiful city in the state of Paraná in southern Brazil. This song is dedicated to my brother Beto, to Mr.Orlando, Mr.Mario and all my friends who live there.

11. Martini Seco

is one of my oldest songs. It was written for Mr.Paul Desmond, who says: "I hope my sax do the same effect of a Dry Martini". I agree.

12. Xuxu - The Clown

a song about what is inside the heart of a clown and it's dedicated to a very special one who taught me an important lesson.

13. Angels Can´t Sleep (But can Fly)

a three part song that tells the story of an angel falling to Earth and all the hard work he (or she) has with mankind.

14. Paranoia’s Blues

for those moments when we have to climb a mountain but our thoughts stay in another place (a honkytonk bar with a beer in one hand and looking to some pretty girls).

15. Minueto - Part I & II

is dedicated to my teacher Sergio de Pinna. The first part is an original from the classical composer Roberto de Viséo and the other, some variations of my own. This song was entirely recorded as a guitar solo with no sequencers, only the synth guitar.

16. The Untold Story of Arthur, The King

tells the story of King Arthur (the man from Camelot...) and his hate for Lancelot. It is dedicated to a bad guy.

17. Mr.Davis

a song dedicated to three musical genius: Mr.Miles Davis, Mr.Jaco Pastorius and Mr.Tom Jobim.
